A mobile app for people considering cosmetic surgery. An AI face scan suggests suitable procedures, then users book a matching surgeon, chat with them and keep their records in one place. I was the senior UX designer in a team of three.

Context:
A client in the USA wanted to help people considering cosmetic surgery find the right procedure and the right surgeon. Users scan their face, AI facial analysis suggests procedures that fit their goals, and a preview shows the potential new look. From there they compare surgeons, book an appointment, chat with the doctor and keep their scans and medical records in the app. I was the senior UX designer in a team of three, in 2024.
Problem:
Cosmetic surgery is a niche market, and a very personal one. Many of the people we needed to learn from felt self-conscious about their appearance and didn’t want to talk about it, so recruiting relevant users and running the usual UX research was hard.
Constraints:
A small, hard-to-reach user group and a sensitive subject: people’s faces, and how they feel about them. With little direct research to lean on, every step had to feel safe and free of judgement.
Process:
1. Onboarding: a short intro, sign-up with OTP verification and a personal welcome that explains what the app does. 2. AI face scan: an optional scan, a $1 unlock for a preview of the potential new look, a before-and-after view and suggested procedures. 3. Finding a surgeon: procedures to explore, surgeons with ratings, reviews and the number of surgeries done, then a request for a preferred date and time. 4. After booking: booking status, chat with the doctor, scan history, and records uploaded by the doctor or the user.
Decision:
Let people explore before they scan. The face scan is optional, so users can browse procedures and surgeons first and scan only when they feel ready. Results are framed around their own goals, with a before-and-after preview, rather than around what might be ‘wrong’ with their face.
Outcome:
We delivered the full UX flows and UI for the user app, from onboarding and the AI face scan to booking, doctor chat and records, even with very few users to research with.
